Blepharitis/meibomianitis

Symptoms

Heavy lids, itching, burning, mild pain, grainy sensation, watering, crusting of the lids on awakening. Redness of the eyes is usually mild. Eyelid margins may show prominent blood vessels. Discharge if any is white and frothy.

Etiology

It is an infection of the Meibomian glands of the eyelids usually associated with rubbing of the eyes and poor hygeine. Poor viison may also be a causitive factor because one has the tendency to rub the eyes more often.

Treatment

  • Scrub eyelid margins with mild shampoo (baby shampoo) 2-3 times a day using a cotton-tip.
  • Warm compresses 10-15 minutes 2-4 times a day.
    Antibiotic eye ointment over the lid margins 4 times a day
  • Oral antibiotics may be prescribed as well.
